Tips On Making a Career Move After a Serious Injury

Tips On Making a Career Move After a Serious Injury Article made possible by JibberJobber supporters Were you previously injured on the job? If so, it’s highly unlikely that you will ever physically be able to go back to work and hold the same exact position. So now that you are healed, you’re thinking about your options for a new jobâ€"a possible career change. Switching to something new and unknown can be scary and exciting at the same time. Here are just a few tips for finding the right job that meets your personal and financial needs. Schedule A One-On-One With Your Attorney Was part of your injury the result of an accident or injury on the job? If so, you likely had to file a worker’s compensation claim in order to receive further compensation. This process should be handled by a qualified local attorney. For instance, those hurt on the job in the New York area need an experienced workers compensation lawyer in NY rather than one located out of state. While your lawyer fought for your compensation and benefits, he can also help you with transitioning to a new job and making a successful career move. Keep in mind that you may forfeit some or all of your workmen’s compensation if you go back to work and become employed full time. There are certain laws and restrictions in New York and other states so you’ll need to be fully aware of these limitations before you embark on your new career. Keep your financial livelihood safe, while still thriving and moving forward with your successes. Educate Yourself Were you once in the construction industry? Or maybe you were an HVAC specialist? If you’re unable to do any intense physical labor like you were once used to, you’ll have to educate yourself on something new and innovative. This starts with a quality education that will allow you to grow and improve mentally. Because you are on workers compensation, or if your income has been reduced due to your injury, you may qualify for free or low-cost tuition. Start by contacting a local vocational center in your area and ask them about programs for displaced workers. They may have certain programs that they will train you for and help you with finding a new job in that field. You may also qualify for a grant or tuition assistance with going back to school or college. Applying for scholarships is also beneficial in having some assistance with paying for the cost of books, transportation, and tuition. Do Some Research While you know you can’t go back to intense physical labor like you did with your previous job, you’re still unsure what type of job you wish to apply for. If you find yourself with no or limited office skills or sales knowledge, it can be hard to appeal to fast-paced employers who are looking for fresh experience. It’s important to do some research on what jobs are in demand in your area. Looking up market trends is a simple task that you can do by obtaining your local city paper and going through the classified section. What types of jobs are in the most demand? If it’s in the medical field, maybe you’ll want to consider going to school for something that is medical-related. Researching first will give the best idea for what type of career path you’ll want to lean towards. Market Your Skills When was the last time you had to apply for a job? Or write a resume and cover letter for a new job position? If it’s been longer than you can remember, you may want to polish up your resume building skillsâ€"a lot. If you’re unfamiliar with what goes into writing and creating a resume that will attract your name and credentials to future employers, leave it to pros. Hire a professional writer to create a resume and cover letter package that is up-to-date and appealing to someone looking to hire an experienced, well put together person. Still don’t know what the next step is? If you’re having trouble finding a new job via online search or through the paper, visit an employment agency. This is a great place to start because the agency will gather all of your information, offer test placement and highlight your specific skill set. From there, the agency will market your resume and help match you up with eager employers looking for qualified candidates. Transitioning back into the job force can be daunting. Simplify the process by educating and marketing yourself for the right position. Perfectionism is a disease. Heres how to beat it.

Perfectionism is a disease. Heres how to beat it. Its amazing that people admit to being perfectionists. To me, its a disorder, not unlike obsessive-compulsive disorder. And like obsessive-compulsive disorder, perfectionism messes you up. It also messes up the people around you, because perfectionists lose perspective as they get more and more mired in details. We can never achieve perfection any of us. Yet so many people keep trying to reach this elusive goal and they drive themselves crazy in the process. So cut it out. Accept that its okay to do a mediocre job on a certain percentage of your work. If you need convincing, consider this: Perfectionism is a risk factor for depression. No kidding. Sydney Blatt, psychologist at Yale University, finds that perfectionists are more likely to kill themselves than regular, mediocre-performing people. Here are three steps to take to avoid the perfectionism trap: 1. Allow yourself to be wrong in front of others. Try having an opinion that is wrong. Tell a story that is stupid. Wear clothes that dont match. Turn in a project that you cant fully explain. People will not think youre stupid. People will think you spent your time and energy doing something else ? something that meant more to you. We all have many competing demands. We do not presume to know other peoples demands. But we are all sure of one thing: Our work is often not the most important thing on our plate. Also, youll notice that people are not particularly vested in you being right. They dont care if youre right or wrong in what you do or say. They just want you to get stuff done well enough that they can do what they need to do. And this is usually a far cry from perfection. The other huge problem with perfectionism is that people stop learning when theyre constantly afraid of being wrong. We learn by making mistakes. The only way we understand ourselves is to test our limits. If we dont want anyone to know we make mistakes, which is how perfectionists tend to behave, we are actually hiding our true selves. 2. Be a hard worker rather than a perfectionist. You can be a hard-working person and cut corners. In fact, its often a requirement: Smart people cut corners. The art of being a star performer is knowing which corners to cut. Focus on your goals, and be honest with yourself about whether your goals require perfectionism along the way. A lot of times perfectionism is a way to avoid focusing on goals. Real goals, after all, almost always require a little bit of luck and assistance along the way factors the perfectionists tend to dismiss. 3. Spend your energy making yourself likable. Tiziana Casciaro reports in the Harvard Business Review that people are not all that interested in you being super-good at your job. They care if they like you. And, Casciaro found that if someone does not like you, he or she will decide youre incompetent whether you are or not. Sad, yes, but the converse is true as well. You can do a poor job and no one will notice if they like you. And, newsflash: In many instances, this is good for business teams do better work when everyone on the team likes everyone else. So dont worry about doing a perfect job. Do a decent job, but leave yourself enough time to manage your relationships at work. Take lunch. Participate in office politics, because office politics is really about being nice which, frankly, is more healthy and certainly more achievable than being perfect.

How to Work Online When You Think Youre Too Old [Guest Post] - Career Pivot

How to Work Online When You Think You're Too Old [Guest Post] - Career Pivot How to Work Online When You Think You’re Too Old The ‘how’ of working online is actually the easiest part of everything. The hard part of working online is what is going on in your mind. Let’s first define ‘too old’ What age would that be? 45? 55? 65? 75? I bet we would all answer that differently â€" depending on our current age. Well, I’m here to tell you that you are never too old to work online. That’s the joy of it. It doesn’t take a 20-year old body to work online. You may have issues with sitting too long or arthritic hands on the keyboard, but that’s all very manageable in today’s world of special chairs and ergonomic keyboards. Your body is never too old for this type of work. You may even believe that your brain is not as sharp as it should be to work online. Actually, in my opinion, the very opposite is true. You may not know the words to the latest Top 40 hit songs but your brain knows the tips and tricks needed to get the best results for your clients while avoiding major obstacles that have proven disastrous. And, it’s all from the years of experience in that brain of yours. So there you have it â€" ‘too old’ should not be an issue for you. Let’s look atwhat you’ll do online The next most important part of working online is the “what.” What will you do? This is a biggie because you may be doing this work for the rest of your life. You don’t have to, but once you learn to do it well, you might want to just keep doing it. So, it’s important you choose something you truly enjoy. It doesn’t matter that you have had 50 years working as an accountant. If the thought of balancing another spreadsheet sends you screaming, please don’t look for accounting work online. You need to figure out who you want to be next What do you love to do?Is there a need for that passion that can be done for a price online? What if you can spend the rest of your life earning money doing what you love â€" all from the place you love to be? Listen to the most recent episode Now, we have to be reasonable, of course. If you love to draw but the extent of your drawing capabilities is stick figures, it is unlikely that you will find someone willing to pay you to draw those stick figures. However, maybe you learn (online and for free) just a little more and learn to draw just a little better and then you can be paid for that skill. Perhaps you can take that skill (as novice as it may be) and help those with limited hand abilities learn how to draw the basics. Maybe you teach basic art lessons to the homebound online.Their family sets everything up for them and they learn from you while watching the screen. They don’t need a professional, they just need someone a few steps ahead of them to show them how it’s done. I don’t know,it’s just a thought, but all things can be done. Decide how you want to spend your days Do you easily get bored with too much free time? Maybe you want to work all day and just relax at night. On the other hand, maybe you want to work just a few hours each day and spend the rest of the hours on the golf course or with friends and family. That’s doable too. The important thing is to know yourself. Do you want to work from your home office? Or would you rather work around other people? There are work spaces now that you can rent just to work from and be around other people working the same way. Or, as I see all the time, you can work from coffee shops and restaurants. The noise can really help me focus. It’s funny that way. You need to know what you want. The type of work you do will depend on the type of day you want to have. Once you have the right mindset, know what you love, and understand how you work best, you can actually look at the ‘how’ â€" which, as I said earlier, I believe is the easiest part of all. Learn the ‘how’ of working online I’ve broken down a few of the steps I believe are most important: You need to research what people are paying others to do right now. You can look at Upwork.com just to see the jobs that are listed. The competition on this site can be fierce but the research you can do on there is priceless. You can see if people are asking for your type of work. If they are, you can then see what they are asking that the candidate know (in terms of programs and knowledge). If there are programs you have never heard of, look them up. You can bet that those programs are needed by other clients as well. Once you find the program online â€" learn it. There are free tutorials on YouTube.com and sometimes even on that program’s very own website. (I once learned a program I hadn’t purchased yet by sitting in a course for a week put on by that program. All online and all for free.) Make sure all of your social media profiles show that new program knowledge. Before you start writing to potential clients, you want to make sure that what they see online represents what you can do for them â€" not necessarily what you have done in the past. This is important. Online clients care more about the results you can give them than in the past years of experience. It’s a very different mindset when talking to potential clients. Working online actually takes very little equipment to get started. You will need a reliable computer with lots of memory and the ability to back it up regularly. That’s really all you need. There are many other items you can purchase later but justto get started, it’s very basic. Now what? All that’s left is to reach out to potential clients and express your interest in their position or their company. There are many places to look, but this article from Forbes.com will give you a list of many to try out. Note: Some of the sites are for employee work (both full-time and part-time) while others are freelancing or contract work. (This is why it’s important to know how you want your day to run. A day for an online, full-time employee looks very different than a day for an online freelancer. But, of course, the pay and benefits look much different as well.) You just need to know there’s a difference. I was 48 when I started working full-time, online from home.Friends of mine were starting to talk about upcoming retirement and the second half of life. We were all discussing what the future would look like. I’m here to tell you that no matter your age, working online is not only possible, but it’s exciting and freeing and makes the future full of possibilities. In fact, it can make you feel like a kid again! Feeling like a kid and working when and from where you want â€" there’s no such thing as ‘too old’ for that! This post was written by Stephanie Brodt, owner of Virtual Executive Services. She left the corporate world after 20+ years of working as an Executive Assistant to Presidents and CEOs. She now teaches others how to leave their 9 to 5 and work online from wherever they choose. You can find out more about Stephanie at stephaniebrodt.com. How to Provide an Optimal Employee Experience in the Workplace

How to Provide an Optimal Employee Experience in the Workplace The workplace is transforming at an unprecedented rate. We’ve now entered the cognitive era, where machines have the capacity to learn, reason, and interact with humans. This has resulted in blurred boundaries between humans and technology. But there’s nothing to fear. Humans can now work with and see firsthand benefits from new technologies to achieve more than ever before. In a way, the cognitive era is really the “human era” where work proves to be a more rewarding experience for employees. Because of this, organizations are reexamining their employees’ experiences at work as guidelines for improved job performance and sustained competitive advantage. Employee experience is best defined as an impactful and powerful â€" and ultimately human â€" experience, one in which employees feel inspired to invest more of their entire selves into the workplace. Research shows that if employees experience higher levels of respect and support and a sense of belonging at work, they tend to perform better, are more likely to exert discretionary effort at their jobs, and are less likely to leave companies. “Organizations that provide more positive employee experiences stand to see greater ROI in terms of company success,” said Derek Irvine, Vice President, Client Strategy and Consulting, at Globoforce. “Employees’ commitment to their organizations increases significantly if they feel a sense of belonging and feel valued.” To improve employee experience, organizations must ask how their cultures can be enhanced to become more human-friendly. Answers can be found in a new study conducted by the IBM Smarter Workforce Institute and Globoforce’s WorkHuman Research Institute, which takes into account the employee experiences of 23,000 employees in 45 countries and territories. The study’s resulting index captures five core facets of the modern employee experience: sense of belonging, purpose, achievement, happiness, and vigor. To enhance each of these, the study indicates that company leaders and managers need to provide a high level of clarity and direction. The study also examines organizational practices that drive “humanness” levels at work, including organizational trust, supportive coworker relationships, meaningful work, recognition, feedback and growth, empowerment and voice, and work-life balance. As the study shows there are several methods to improve employee experience in the workplace: Promote greater positive work experiences to retain talent. Analysis shows employees with less positive experiences are more than twice as likely to say they want to leave, versus those with much more positive experiences (44 percent vs. 21 percent). Offer recognition programs that provide rewards based on demonstrating core values. Organizations that do so have a considerably higher employee experience index score than those in organizations without recognition programs (81 percent vs. 62 percent). Recognize employees for the good work they do. 83 percent of employees report positive experiences when recognized, compared to 38 percent that are not recognized. Allow employee voices to be heard. Employees who feel their ideas and suggestions matter are more than twice as likely to report a positive employee experience than those who don’t (83 percent vs. 34 percent). Foster team dynamics in the workplace. Employees in teams have more positive employee experiences at work than those who work independently (73 percent vs. 61 percent). We must also recognize the role leaders and managers play in defining employees’ work experiences, and enable managers to design experiences consistent with an organization’s core values. An organization’s actions need to emulate the values it wants its employees to practice as well as nurture an environment that reinforces mutually supportive coworker relationships. This helps employees understand the deeper meaning of their work and how it contributes to the wider organizational purpose and goals. These analyses indicate that more positive employee experiences are linked to better performance, extra effort at work, and lower turnover rates. Most importantly, organizations must listen regularly to the voices of their employees to understand the nature of their experiences at work. In doing so, these employee experiences will drive discretionary energy, resulting in the best work of employees’ lives for their companies. Writing Achievement Based Resume

Writing Achievement Based ResumeAchieving a high level of accomplishment based on what you have accomplished is important in getting your dream job. You must know that if you do not have any accomplishments to show, you can still use that kind of resume to help get you where you want to be. You will be surprised how many people do not have any accomplishments to tell. The first thing that you need to realize is that it is usually easy to write an accomplishments section for a resume. It is very simple and does not take a lot of time. When you are typing, be careful to be sure that you spell everything correctly. Using misspelled words will really make a difference when you try to get your message across. The next important thing to remember is that you can include as much as you want about yourself. This is the same as if you were to be in an interview. You can include your achievements in that you have accomplished this in a given amount of time. That way, it shows that you can handle the job.Be sure to have your accomplishments transcribed in a clear manner. Many people find it helpful to use a proof reader or even write it down in the results section. This is not necessary though. Remember that you are looking for something that looks like professional writing.Experience is very important. Do not forget to include any experiences that you may have had in terms of a project or any other type of job. This is very important for getting the interview call. While you are on the subject of experiences, be sure to include possible references you have for those experiences. These should include your previous employers and maybe even a reference from the university that you were at. This is something that you should include regardless of the position you are applying for. It is hard to find someone who has no experience in this kind of field. It is a great idea to include some kind of personal history. When talking about your work experience, you need to also talk about your educational history. This is a very important part of a resume because it gives people a sense of who you are and what you have accomplished so far. If you are applying for a post that requires training, this would be a good idea to include. These are some tips that you can use when writing achievement based resume. You will find that it is very simple and does not take much time. Do not worry about being too formal. You want your resume to be as informal as possible.
