4 sloppy speech habits that undermine your influence

4 sloppy speech habits that undermine your influence4 sloppy speech habits that undermine your influenceAt what point would you stop listening to aspeakerwho opens with So, OK, I wanted to just briefly, you know, give you an overview, I think Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreThis is how Ian, a director at a scientificresearchinstitute, recently started one of ourcoaching sessions. (Im changing any identifying information to protect client confidentiality.)As you might guess, people tune Ian out because his speech is littered with meaningless fillers. Worse, they frequently interrupt him because they worry hell waste their time.Even though Ian is brilliant, visionary, and prolific in his research, he struggles to earn respect as a leader. Team members often emerge from meetings with him confused and unsure of what he wanted.Increase your own clarity and look more like a leader by eliminating these four influence killers in your own speech1.Saying so when you begin speakingIts a little word with a big impact. When you start with so, youre tentatively asking for permission to be heard. Its the metaphorical equivalent of raising your hand.Eliminate your so startersSay a persons name instead. When directly addressing one person, instead of saying So zu siches an overview, say Jamie, heres an overview.Address the entire audience. When youre addressing a group, you might say something like, Thank you all for your comments in preparation for this meeting.Pause before speaking.Breathe, and then begin intentionally. Youll look thoughtful and grounded.Prepare your first sentence ahead of time. For example, you could state the purpose of the meeting, Our purpose today is to ensure the overview matches the goals we set out to achieve.2. Using filler wordsWords such as you know, kind of, um, ah, and er are fillers because they dont convey meaning. fruchtwein people have emb edded their favorite filler word or phrase so deeply into their speech that they dont notice it anymore. While the occasional filler word is unavoidable (and maybe a sign youre speaking conscientiously), an abundance of them give the impression youre uncertain.Trash the fillersAnalyze your speech. With permission from the other person, record a conversation. When you play back the recording, count how many fillers you used, noting each type. Do you use fillers throughout your speech or only in particular places? Knowing when you use them can help you understand why you use them.Create an antidote.Depending on when you use fillers, you might have different antidotes. For instance, if you use ums instead of periods at the end of each sentence, visualize the period at the end of the sentence and consciously take a breath instead.Eliminate one at a time.If you have a diverse vocabulary of fillers, trash one filler at a time. Paying attention to too many will distract and frustrate you.Ask a friend for help.Ask a trusted colleague to cue you when they notice you using your favorite filler.Playback your conversations.Keep recording your conversations and notice any progress. With regular listening, youll be able to anticipate when youre about to filler-ize your sentence and stop yourself.Gmail users can try theJust Not Sorry add-onto eliminate fillers in their emails.3.Asking permissionWhen you say I want to or Id like to, you may come across as diffident, and listeners may become impatient for what you actually want to say.Dont say, I want to show you a chart with our competitive analysis. You can simply say, Heres a chart with our competitive analysis.Be stingy with your wantsDistinguish between a want and a votum.I want to sleep now. Would you please turn down the TV? is a want. Heres our competitive analysis is a statement.4.Using I think as a qualifierWhen you frequently use I think, you sound unsurelike youre trying to establish your competence.Jackie (not her r eal name) is a general manager at an IT company and another one of my coaching clients. Two months ago, her manager told her she needed to be more assertive. She started using I think frequently because she believed this phrase asserted her point of view more forcefully. In fact, it made her appear less confident.James Pennebaker, a psychology professor at UT Austin, who studies how we speak, shows inhis researchthat frequent use of the word I lowers a persons perceived status.Reduce your I think countState your opinion.Your audience will assume that what youre saying is based on what you think.End with assurance.Qualifying your statement at the end will equally undermine its credibility.Clean speech isnt window dressing its a powerful leadership tool for being heard, influencing others, and, ultimately, getting what you want. This article first appeared on Leaderly .You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

Off the Grid How to Map Engineering Competency

Off the Grid How to Map Engineering Competency Off the Grid How to Map Engineering Competency In todays aging engineering workforce, a rash of retirements and other factors pose a threat to technology companies. Those that dont fully understand the skills and contributions of their engineers risk losing their engineering know-how along with their engineers. The process known as competency mapping can help ansicht companies preserve the knowledge that safeguards their future. Competency mapping looks for the soft skills or behaviors that distinguish effective employees and potential leaders. But in a profession as complex as engineering, how is it possible to assess a persons competency?A case study from the South American energy company Ecopetrol, S.A., shows one approach.Ecopetrol and its consultant, RWD, LLC, launched a project to understand the objective skills engineers need to function effectively in a refinery operation. RWD uses a grid format to measure engineering competence, e stablish skill gaps and identify areas for training or other responses.RWD follows a simple premise when mapping engineering competency. Because engineers are problem-solvers by nature, the only two parameters to measure them against are The Problem and How to Solve the Problem.Thats where the grids come in. Those two parameters form the x- and y-axes of two 2-dimensional grids that shed light on an engineers competency.Grid 1 The Outcome/Experience MapThe Outcome/Experience (or O/E) map decomposes each required task into an action and an object of the action. For example, to map the task of troubleshooting compressors, your x-axis would be labeled Troubleshoot, and your y-axis would be Compressors. All identifiable engineering actions associated with the compressor tasks such as inspection and documentation and vibration analysis, for example would all go on the x-axis. The y-axis would consist of the different schriftarts of compressors in the plant. Each type of equipment and its corresponding actions needs its own O/E map, plotted in the same way. Similarly, preparing the mapping model to all tasks associated with each discipline in engineering will help you make sure all tasks on the list are visually distinct and that the list is exhaustive.Grid 2 The Knowledge/Capability MapThe Knowledge/Capability, or K/C, map defines the resources needed to prepare an engineer to perform a particular task and suggests the correct level of skill or cognitive ability he or she must have to be considered qualified to do that task. You create the K/C map by reverse-engineering each task on the O/E map. On this grid, organize your resources on the y-axis by degree of utility from top to bottom. Divide the x-axis into three or four cognitive levels of complexity. Each cell in the map contains a competency statement that matches a specific resource item with a specific cognitive level on the x-axis.What Can You Do?The K/C maps main use is to determine an engineers capabilities . You can use a completed K/C map to create training programs that address an engineers gaps in competence. At Ecopetrol, the discipline of process engineering was chosen as the first subject for competency mapping. After building a training plan to address findings in process engineering, subsequent phases of the project would apply lessons learned to other engineering disciplines.Within two months, it was the mechanical engineers turn. The project focused first on two roles fixed-equipment engineers and rotating-equipment engineers.Separate teams of subject-matter experts were formed for fixed-and rotating-equipment engineering. We first made Outcome/Experience maps for both of these roles before tackling the K/C maps. The maps are designed to be used together to assess the competency status quo (through as is maps) and to visualize the desired results (through to be maps). In this four-step process, you first, create the to be maps. Each job level should ultimately have two complet ed to be maps charting the appropriate job level for each task on the O/E map, and assigning a competence level for all resources itemized on the K/C map.Next, have each engineer map his or her own current level of experience and competency on blank K/C maps. These self-assessments are the as is maps. Then compare and analyze the to be maps and the as is maps to reveal each engineers competency gaps. Finally, recommend an action plan for engineers who show competency gaps. The curriculum map can help match the best training strategies. All told, these analyses are providing valuable insights that shape the companys training agenda an issue more important than ever in light of the aging engineering workforce. All companies much map the competencies of its current professionals and take steps to replace knowledge at risk of disappearing.Adapted from Mapping Competencies by Saidas Ranade, Cassio Tamara, Edgar Castiblanco, and Anibal Serna, for Mechanical Engineering, February 2010.All tol d, these analyses are providing valuable insights that shape the companys training agenda an issue more important than ever in light of the aging engineering workforce.

A Millennial CEO on the greatest (and most fun) trick for brainstorming

A Millennial CEO on the greatest (and fruchtwein fun) trick for brainstormingA Millennial CEO on the greatest (and most fun) trick for brainstormingDani Beckerman is truly a Millennial CEO, but that shouldnt be perceived as a negative. It is quite an awesome thing in this case. After all, zu sich company, Jars by Dani, is what it is today (which is quite successful) because of Instagram (she boasts over 56,000 followers). She also has an impossibly cool style, showing up to speak on panels and interviews in those white chunky sneakers that are oh so cool right now (while when some of us try them on we look like a weird adult size version of Punky Brewster and by some of us we mean me).Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreHowever, dont let that youthful face and effortlessly laid back style fool you. This young woman is a super driven successful CEO whose company is making a major mark in the food industry.Like all great ideas, Jars by Dani was born out of looking for a fun way to impress zu sich friends at a dinner party back in 2013. She decided to get a little whacky after a particularly inspirational trip to Michaels and put dessert in a jar. It was delicious and also incredibly beautiful, which in this visual currency age, is just as important as the taste.Beckerman, who was attending culinary school during this time, shared a photo of her creation on Instagram and soon friends were sharing the photos, and friends of friends were asking where they could get one and shortly after that, she realized she had a business on her kralles. Before long she was making hundreds of jar desserts a day out of her own kitchen (with a very patient roommate and without a mixer mind you) and hand delivering them herself, with a little help of the New York transit system.I was in the best shape Id ever been in, she told Ladders as climbing flights of stairs every day was imper ative for the crucial beginning of her business.Soon, her beautiful jars caught the eyes of some very famous dessert eaters including Diane von Furstenberg and other fashion brands who require the perfect artistic dessert including Barneys New York, Helmut Lang, Tiffany Co., Milly, Elle, and Glamour.Eventually, the company moved out of her kitchen and into a real test kitchen and office space and now has a staff of 14 people (30 during their very busy holiday season.)Dancing by myselfJars by Dani, which is available nationwide, is also always collaborating with other brands including by Chloe, Microsoft, HBFit and a little cupcake shop no one in New York has heard of called Magnolia. This means Beckerman, in addition to running her business and all the complexities that come with it, constantly has to come up with new ideas.Future plans include expanding her dessert offerings and opening her own store. So how does she stay creative? Dancing around in front of the mirror. No for real . She had tried meditation and it just wasnt working for her (plus, this sounds a lot more fun.)I came up with the best ideas and flavors here. First of all, it is a real confidence builder. Confidence is a mindset meditation. You have to like yourself, she told Ladders.Beckerman said she actually stopped doing the dancing technique for a bit and she felt an impact so she recently incorporated it back into her routine When you dance in the mirror think about what you like about yourself.Plus, studies have shown that dancing was associated with an improved cognitive function for aging adults as it helps with physical agility and mental strength. Dancing, more so than most other physical activities, requires mental, physical, emotional and social skills. And thinking about desserts sounds good too.You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

The proper way to break up with your work wife

The proper way to break up with your work wifeThe proper way to break up with your work wifeHave you ever wondered if its time to split from your work wife or husband? Maybe its the seven-year-itch after working togetherbei for years and sharing private jokes and lunch leftovers, youve lost that loving feeling and wonder if its time for a break. Or maybe its mora vitriolic. It could be the time he took credit for your work, or her inability to take criticism even when her job and yours is in jeopardy. For some people, a work spouse is a close confidant and partner in crime. My work husband grounded me, said Trisha D. who chose not to reveal her full name for fear it might negatively impact her career. And while I trusted him with my most important decisions, after a while I had a sneaking suspicion that he wasnt just grounding me, he was intentionally grinding me down. Trisha relied heavily on her work husband for help making important decisions. At a certain point, she started taki ng his advice over that of her actual husband. It caused a huge rift in my personal life, she said. At that point, Trisha knew it was time to break up with her former work spouse. When hes not lecturing, M. Chad McBride, Ph.D., Professor Chair, Department of Communication Studies at Creighton University College of Arts Sciences spends a good portion of his time examining the work spouse relationship. To that end, hes conducted over 40 interviews with people who have broken up with work spouses and compares it to the breakups of a romantic relationship or friendship. One of the challenges in a work breakup is that if you break up with your real-life partner, you might still have to see them or speak to them occasionally to co-parent or make decisions, McBride said. As opposed to the work spouse where you have to work with the same co-worker every single day. It can actually be more difficult to break up with them. Before deciding to split up with your work wife you also need to realiz e that there might be fallout from the split throughout the office. McBride said, You have to really think through and be careful what you say to that person and how you talk about each other to the coworkers and boss. As with the break up of a marriage, you might have to talk through the story you both want to share with your work family. You might also have to agree not to badmouth each other, or even to present a unified front when asked about the breakup.Trisha said that in her own work break up, she brought in a mediator, someone from the company HR department. She figured in that way shed preempt any attempts by her former work spouse of undermining her publicly. Ultimately, Trisha thinks she made the right decision. If people can use a mediator when getting divorced, why not at work?Relationships ebb and flow, so it makes sense that sometimes you are more or less close over time, McBride said. In that case, you end up spending less time together or each of you works on other projects. Its a different kind of breakup, less egregious according to McBride. But you should keep in mind, that just as in affairs of the heart, some breakups get ugly. And before you dump your office significant other, you should think long and hard about what happens if it all blows up. In a major contentious breakup, one or both leave the company since it becomes just too hard to work when youre having problems with a work spouse, McBride said.Still determined to break up with your work husband or wife?McBride says to Think through it as carefully as you would a real breakup, since its not like a work friend where you might not have to see each other. How will you react when you see them every day?Find the right way to break up McBride said if theres a situation where you can stop working on a project together, its a way to ease out of the relationship.Choose the right time If the office will be closed for a week, consider breaking up just before the holiday. That will give peop le time to naturally get over their inclination to pry.

United States Military Weapons of War

United States Military Weapons of WarUnited States Military Weapons of WarThe main weapons and equipment items used by the United States DoD members are listed below. Listing every weapon in the arsenal would not be practical for an article, so this series will cover the highlights, starting with some of the main weapons and equipment used by the Infantry and Special Operations Units. Then the discussion will turn to military vehicles, including tanks and armor, missiles and artillery, military aircraft, and military ships and submarines. Small Arms M-4 Carbine The M-4 combat assault rifle first entered Army service in 1997. The rifle is the voreingestellt weapon used by some Army units such as the 82nd Airborne Division and special operations units, such as ?Army Rangers. With a shortened barrel and collapsible stock, the M-4 is ideal for close quarter marksmanship where lightweight and quick action arerequired. Firing a standard 5.56mm round, the weapon weighs a mere 5.6 lbs. ( empty). A revised rear sight allows for better control of the weapon out to the maximum range of the ammunition used. The M4 has also benefited from its customization. Current versions of the rifle offer several attachments, including sight mounts, flashlights, grenade launchers, and shotguns. The M110 Sniper Rifle The M110 was initially deployed for active use by U.S. Army soldiers in Afghanistan in April 2007. Soldiers with Task Force Fury were the first to use the rifle in a real combat zone. The initial response was enthusiastic. Snipers and spotters who used the weapon praised its semi-automatic capabilities as an improvement over previous bolt action rifles that required soldiers to manually reload the weapons chamber after each shot. M40A5/6/7 Sniper Rifle It is the preferred sniper rifle for the U.S. Marine korporation. The M40A5 sniper rifle is cousined on the Remington model 700. It is a heavy barrel, bolt action magazine-fed 7.62mm rifle that is optimized for accuracy wi th Match Grade ammunition. The rifle is equipped with a special Schmidt Bender 31250mm versicherungspolice Marksman II LP scope, the rifle weighs approximately 16.5 pounds. It is equipped with a built-in five round magazine. The M-249 official personenname is the SAW which means Squad Automatic Weapon. Early test versions of the M-249 were plagued with problems, but the current model is considered reliable. The weapon entered Army service in 1987, replacing the M-60 Machine Gun. The M-249 is a .223 cal (5.56mm) gas operated lightweight machine gun which feeds from a belt held in a 100 or 200 rounds box under the gun. This weapon has a plastic pistol grip and a folding stock so it can be kept compact and light. M-240 Machine Gun The M-240 entered Army and Marine Corps service in 1997. The M-240 fires the 7.62mm NATO round. Advantages of this weapon include its popularity with other nations forces and number of configurations. For example, in a helicopter crash, the M-240d helicopter -mount version could be quickly modified by installing the bipod and buttstock of the M-240b version, which would then allow the weapon to be used for self-defense by the surviving helicopter crew members. The Browning M2 .50 Caliber Machine Gun, Heavy barrel is an automatic, recoil operated, air-cooled machine gun with adjustable headspace and is crew transportable with limited amounts of ammunition over short distances. This gun has a back plate with spade grips, trigger, and bolt latch release. This gun may be mounted on ground mounts and most vehicles as an anti-personnel and anti-aircraft weapon. The gun is equipped with leaf-type rear sight, flash suppressor, and a spare barrel assembly. Associated components are the M63 antiaircraft mount and the M3 tripod mount. The Joint Service Combat Shotgun is a compact, lightweight, semi-automatic, 12 gauge weapon configured with a standard magazine with a tiefpunkt capacity of six 2 3/4 inch cartridges. M1014 Joint Services Combat Shotg un (JSCS) is the US Department of Defense designation of the Benelli M4 Super 90. The M-1014 is constructed of lightweight polymer materials and corrosion resistant metal components. To enhance mission performance and provide increased operator flexibility, the M-1014 is equipped with modular components such as modular stocks in various configurations and modular barrels of various lengths. The MP5-N fires from a closed and locked bolt in either the automatic or semiautomatic modes. This gun is recoil operated and has a unique delayed roller locked bolt ordnungsprinzip, a retractable buttstock, a removable suppressor, and illuminating flashlight integral to the forward hand guard. The flashlight is operated by a pressure switch custom fitted to the pistol grip. This is the same basic weapon used by the FBIs Hostage Rescue Team and other world-class counter-terrorist organizations. The present inventory includes both suppressed and non-suppressed versions of the MP5. The basic config uration of this weapon makes for an ideal size, weight, and capable (accuracy, lethality, reliability, etc.) close quarters battle weapon system. Hand Grenades Hand grenades are small bombs, containing explosives or chemicals, that can be thrown by hand or rigged as booby traps. There are several varieties of hand grenades designed for many purposes. All of these grenades can be broadly classified into six general types fragmentation, illumination, chemical, incendiary, smoke, and practice and training grenades. The M67 fragmentation grenade is the standard grenade used by the U.S. Military. It has a smooth, sheet-metal body and is shaped like a ball. Its outer case is lined on the inside with a serrated wire recoil. It is filled with 6.5 ounces of an explosive, known as Composition B, and uses a detonating type of fuse. When the detonator causes Composition B to explode, fragments of the body and fuse assembly are hurled in all directions. The M67 weighs 14 ounces, and the average m an can throw it 40 meters. The effective casualty-producing radius is 15 meters. Small Missiles and Mortars FIM-9 Stinger Missile The Stinger weapon system is a man-portable (34.5 pounds), shoulder-fired, supersonic missile system designed to counter high speed, low-level, ground attack aircraft. The Stinger is effective against helicopters, unmanned aerial vehicles, and observation and transport aircraft. Once fired, the Stinger uses proportional navigation algorithms to guide the missile to a predicted intercept point. The Stinger missile can be used as a man-portable air defense system (MANPAD) when the weapon is fired from the gunners shoulder, mounted aboard the Avenger weapons system, or mounted in the light armored vehicle-air defense variant (LAV-AD). The M252 81mm Medium Extended Range Mortar is a crew-served, medium weight mortar which is highly accurate and provides for a greater range (4,500 meters to 5,650 meters) and lethality than the previous 81mm mortar. The ca nnon has a crew-removable breech plug and firing pin. This mortar also uses the standard M64 mortar sight of the M-224 60mm mortar. The M252 is ideally suited to support airborne, air assault, mountain and light infantry units. The M-252 Mortar is used by the U.S. Army and the U.S. Marine Corps. M-224 Lightweight Mortar The M224 60mm Lightweight Mortar is a smooth bore, muzzle loading, high-angle-of-fire weapon. The cannon assembly is composed of the barrel, combination base cap, and firing mechanism. The mount consists of a bipod and a base plate which is provided with screw type elevating and traversing mechanisms to elevate/traverse the mortar. The M64 sight unit is attached to the bipod mount via a standard dovetail. An additional short-range sight is attached to the base of the cannon tube for firing the mortar on the move and during assaults. It has a spring-type shock absorber to absorb the shock of recoil in firing. AT4 Anti-Armor Weapon The M136 AT4 is the Army and Marine Corps primary light anti-tank weapon. The M136 AT4 is a recoilless rifle used primarily by Infantry Forces for engagement and defeat of light armor. The recoilless rifle design permits accurate delivery of an 84mm High Explosive Anti-Armor warhead, with negligible recoil. The M136 AT4 is a lightweight, self-contained, anti-armor weapon consisting of a free-flight, fin-stabilized, rocket-type cartridge packed in an expendable, one-piece, fiberglass-wrapped tube. The M136 AT4 is man-portable and is fired from the right shoulder only. The launcher is watertight for ease of transportation and storage. Multi-Purpose Assault Weapon MOD 2 The Shoulder-Launched Multi-Purpose Assault Weapon (SMAW) is designed to destroy bunkers and other fortifications during assault operations as well as other designated targets with the dual mode rocket and to destroy main battle tanks with the HEAA rocket. The SMAW is an 83mm man-portable weapon system with High Explosive, Dual Purpose (HEDP) rocket and i s effective against bunkers, masonry and concrete walls, and light armor. The High Explosive Anti-Armor (HEAA) rocket is effective against current tanks without additional armor. The 9mm spotting rounds are ballistic matches to the rockets and increase the gunners first round hit probability. The Dragon Weapon System is designed to engage and destroy armor and light armored vehicles. The weapon is also effective against hard targets such as bunkers and field fortifications. The warhead power of Dragon makes it possible for a single Marine or soldier to defeat armored vehicles, fortified bunkers, concrete gun emplacements, or other hard targets. The launcher consists of a smoothbore fiberglass tube, breech/gas generator, tracker and support, bipod, battery, sling, and forward and aft shock absorbers. Non-integral day and night sights are required to utilize the Dragon. TOW Missile System The tube-launched, optically-tracked, wire-guided (TOW) missile is a crew-portable, vehicle-moun ted, heavy anti-armor weapon system consisting of a launcher and one of five versions of the TOW missile. It is designed to defeat armored vehicles and other targets such as field fortifications from ranges up to 3,750 meters. After firing the missile, the gunner must keep the crosshairs of the sight centered on the target to ensure a hit. The system will operate in all weather conditions in which the gunner can see a target throughout the missile flight by using either a day or night sight. Individual Equipment AN/PVS-14 Night Vision Device (Generation 3) AN/PVS-14 Monocular Night Vision Device (MNVD) is a light-weight, third generation night vision device that gives the soldier the operational advantage to see at night. NVDs (known also as Night Vision Goggles) are electro-optical devices that intensify (or amplify) existing light instead of relying on a light source of their own. The devices are sensitive to a broad spectrum of light, from visible through infrared. When a sol dier looks through a NVD, an amplified electronic image is seen on a phosphor screen, giving the soldier the ability to operate with little or no illumination from the moon, stars, or other ambient light sources. The PVS-14 system can be used with the head mount or with a Kevlar helmet mount. U.S. Army Night Vision and Electronic Sensors Directorate(NVESD) is part of the governing body that dictates the name of the generation ofnight visiontechnologies. The U.S. Army has not yet authorized the use of the name GEN-IV night vision technology. MOLLE Vest MOLLE is an Army and Marine Corps item that replaces the aging ALICE (All-purpose, Lightweight, Individual Carrying Equipment) pack and Integrated Individual Fighting System introduced in 1988. One of the main components of the MOLLE system is the nylon mesh vest that has removable pockets to accommodate different carrying needs. Some of the new technology centers on the MOLLEs frame. A new anatomically-contoured frame made with plasti c originally used in automobile bumpers has dramatically increased durability, functioning in temperatures ranging from -40 to 120 degrees F. MOLLE also advances load-carrying ability with its new suspension system. Heavily-padded shoulder straps and waist belt are adjustable for varying torso lengths, eliminating the two sizes of ALICE. Additionally, the Fighting Load Carrier (FLC) replaces the Load Bearing Equipment (LBE) web belt and suspenders of the ALICE. Flak Vest In October of 2002, the Army and Marine Corps began issuing a new Kevlar flak vest that is 35 percent lighter than the previous version. The 16.4-pound Interceptor system consists of a tactical vest and a pair of small arms protective inserts. The Kevlar vest includes detachable neck and groin guards, while the ceramic plates slide into pockets on the front and rear. By itself, the Interceptor vest insulates a soldier from shrapnel and 9-mm pistol rounds. When the protective inserts are added, the system acts as a b allistic barrier to 7.62-mm rifle ammunition. The previous flak vest only offered protection against fragmentation. The Interceptors inter-changeable components give troops the ability to dress to the level of a particular threat. Applications include combat operations, peace-keeping missions and field-training exercises. Regardless of the situation, Body Armor functions as an effective defense against mines, grenades, mortar shells, artillery fire and rifle projectiles. The Interceptor system allows commanders increased capability in the areas of survivability and maneuverability.

What You Dont Know About Presumed Guilty

What You Dont Know About Presumed Guilty Vital Pieces of Presumed Guilty What father enters the birthing room with their daughter, as an example. Consensual incest is quite common. Already there are lots of unusual words being thrown around. The accusation proved to be a transparent lie from the beginning. Quite simply, knowledge of the facts may have taken some wind from the universal outrage. The argument is so strange its challenging to understand where to get started. Theres no opening argument. How to Fall in Love With Your Job

How to Fall in Love With Your JobHow to Fall in Love With Your JobHow to Love Your JobIf you cant be with the one you love, love the one youre with. Are you spending time fantasizing about cool arbeitszimmers where the team members are best friends and go out for drinks after work? Maybe youre bored and feel your current job has no room for growth or career development opportunities. No job is perfect. Some days are good and others can make you want to throw in the towel and quit. Finding the perfect fit takes time, practice, and patience.Until destiny comes knocking at your inbox, it might be necessary to learn how to be happier at work and enjoy your current job (or at least stop yourself from banging your head against the wall). With a little effort, your piece of coal may reveal a diamond in the rough. Here are a few suggestions on how to fall in love with your job.1. Take on new rolesBoredom doesnt necessarily signal a schwimmbad fit. Sometimes it reflects your commitment and dri ve. Famed British author G.K. Chesterton once said There are no uninteresting things, only uninterested people. If youre tired of the same old job day in and day out, do something about it. Volunteer for extra assignments and new projects, or approach the hiring manager and tell them you would like to shadow a colleague. Most companies promote learning new skills and career development opportunities. Just dont neglect your own work and assignments. One area companies want to advance but tend to ignore is community engagement. Whether its lack of resources or time, many CEOs never conceptualize their volunteer programs. Taking time to volunteer to build a program would benefit the community, company, and your accolades. Start small at first. VolunteerMatch, a company dedicated to bringing charitable causes and companies together, provides free training material and advice for starting a project.2. Build new relationshipsWe spend more time with our colleagues and co-workers than our ow n friends and family, meaning job satisfaction is directly linked to our work relationships. According to a recent report, making friends and having a healthy social life improves stability, interest, and interaction all key aspects of knowing how to love your job. Learning to get along with your peers and enjoy friendly activities may help you change your mind about your current work conditions, going a long way towards staying positive at work.Rather than use office mail, instant messaging like Slack, or email, walk over to your co-workers area and talk directly to them. Ask about their work, projects, and listen to any difficulties they may have. Offer suggestions only when they are welcome. Also consider joining office activities and groups. If none exist, speak with a few like-minded co-workers and start your own group. Activities need not be extensive a walk around the building each day or casual lunch helps build budding relationships.3. Talk to your anfhrer about changesSom etimes its not the company we detest, but rather, the job itself is mundane. Theres nothing wrong with asking for a transfer or seeking another position its a quick way to stay positive at work. Look at the companys career site and see if there are any positions available. Depending on your companys size, they may list positions on Monster or Glassdoor. Many hiring managers give preference to candidates already working for the company.Dont be afraid to recommend other changes as well. You dont have to transfer, change jobs, or leave the company to improve your work surroundings. Carefully think about the areas that need improvement and speak with other co-workers to get their input. Whatever you do, dont complain rather, ask what areas they think could be improved. Then, take these suggestions to your supervisor and ask if you can help with improvements. Make aya your approach is professional and courteous, and they should be receptive to your ideas.Related6 Ways to Impress Your Bo ss4. Make your work area more comfortableGiving your work area a small makeover could mean the difference between a lackluster start to each day and renewed vigor upon entering the office. You dont have to go overboard simply start by eliminating clutter from your area and organizing the space to suit your needs. A well-organized office space is less stressful and helps make your workday smoother. Also, a workspace you love is an easy step towards learning how to love your jobOnce your area is optimized for peak performance, start giving it a customized look. Think of your workplace as an extension of your home or personality. A small potted plant and photos brighten any office area, but be careful not to violate any office policies. Always ask your immediate supervisor before bringing any personal effects from home, because while some offices promote creativity, others require you to maintain a clean look.5. Take a short vacationDo you have extra vacation time that youve accumulate d? Sometimes a quick break works wonders for staying positive at work. If youre starting to hate your job and youre thinking about quitting, consider a short respite. Use this time to evaluate your goals, the pros and cons of staying or leaving the job, and other career options. The point of this time off isnt to take a break or have fun, but instead, its the time necessary to remove yourself from the environment thats causing doubt. Without the negative triggers, a rational decision is easier to make.Three days should be enough to help make a decision. Use the first day to rest, unwind, and allow the stress to leave your body. The next two days should be used for reflection and determining whether youll have better options elsewhere. Be sure to run your thoughts by those who care about you their objective opinions may lead you to see aspects of your job that youve lost sight of. Anonymous online counseling could also be useful. Talkspace, an online counseling service, offers low-co st therapists and advisors to talk about problems and help guide you to the best decision.6. Keep your eye on the prizeWe all want to work at the company of our dreams, whether that means offices on the beach, a pineapple juice dispenser attached to the water fountain, or exciting projects with world-class clients. These dreams are (somewhat) possible, but they take patience and determination.
