How to Work Online When You Think Youre Too Old [Guest Post] - Career Pivot
How to Work Online When You Think You're Too Old [Guest Post] - Career Pivot How to Work Online When You Think Youâre Too Old The âhowâ of working online is actually the easiest part of everything. The hard part of working online is what is going on in your mind. Letâs first define âtoo oldâ What age would that be? 45? 55? 65? 75? I bet we would all answer that differently â" depending on our current age. Well, Iâm here to tell you that you are never too old to work online. Thatâs the joy of it. It doesnât take a 20-year old body to work online. You may have issues with sitting too long or arthritic hands on the keyboard, but thatâs all very manageable in todayâs world of special chairs and ergonomic keyboards. Your body is never too old for this type of work. You may even believe that your brain is not as sharp as it should be to work online. Actually, in my opinion, the very opposite is true. You may not know the words to the latest Top 40 hit songs but your brain knows the tips and tricks needed to get the best results for your clients while avoiding major obstacles that have proven disastrous. And, itâs all from the years of experience in that brain of yours. So there you have it â" âtoo oldâ should not be an issue for you. Letâs look atwhat youâll do online The next most important part of working online is the âwhat.â What will you do? This is a biggie because you may be doing this work for the rest of your life. You donât have to, but once you learn to do it well, you might want to just keep doing it. So, itâs important you choose something you truly enjoy. It doesnât matter that you have had 50 years working as an accountant. If the thought of balancing another spreadsheet sends you screaming, please donât look for accounting work online. You need to figure out who you want to be next What do you love to do?Is there a need for that passion that can be done for a price online? What if you can spend the rest of your life earning money doing what you love â" all from the place you love to be? Listen to the most recent episode Now, we have to be reasonable, of course. If you love to draw but the extent of your drawing capabilities is stick figures, it is unlikely that you will find someone willing to pay you to draw those stick figures. However, maybe you learn (online and for free) just a little more and learn to draw just a little better and then you can be paid for that skill. Perhaps you can take that skill (as novice as it may be) and help those with limited hand abilities learn how to draw the basics. Maybe you teach basic art lessons to the homebound online.Their family sets everything up for them and they learn from you while watching the screen. They donât need a professional, they just need someone a few steps ahead of them to show them how itâs done. I donât know,itâs just a thought, but all things can be done. Decide how you want to spend your days Do you easily get bored with too much free time? Maybe you want to work all day and just relax at night. On the other hand, maybe you want to work just a few hours each day and spend the rest of the hours on the golf course or with friends and family. Thatâs doable too. The important thing is to know yourself. Do you want to work from your home office? Or would you rather work around other people? There are work spaces now that you can rent just to work from and be around other people working the same way. Or, as I see all the time, you can work from coffee shops and restaurants. The noise can really help me focus. Itâs funny that way. You need to know what you want. The type of work you do will depend on the type of day you want to have. Once you have the right mindset, know what you love, and understand how you work best, you can actually look at the âhowâ â" which, as I said earlier, I believe is the easiest part of all. Learn the âhowâ of working online Iâve broken down a few of the steps I believe are most important: You need to research what people are paying others to do right now. You can look at Upwork.com just to see the jobs that are listed. The competition on this site can be fierce but the research you can do on there is priceless. You can see if people are asking for your type of work. If they are, you can then see what they are asking that the candidate know (in terms of programs and knowledge). If there are programs you have never heard of, look them up. You can bet that those programs are needed by other clients as well. Once you find the program online â" learn it. There are free tutorials on YouTube.com and sometimes even on that programâs very own website. (I once learned a program I hadnât purchased yet by sitting in a course for a week put on by that program. All online and all for free.) Make sure all of your social media profiles show that new program knowledge. Before you start writing to potential clients, you want to make sure that what they see online represents what you can do for them â" not necessarily what you have done in the past. This is important. Online clients care more about the results you can give them than in the past years of experience. Itâs a very different mindset when talking to potential clients. Working online actually takes very little equipment to get started. You will need a reliable computer with lots of memory and the ability to back it up regularly. Thatâs really all you need. There are many other items you can purchase later but justto get started, itâs very basic. Now what? All thatâs left is to reach out to potential clients and express your interest in their position or their company. There are many places to look, but this article from Forbes.com will give you a list of many to try out. Note: Some of the sites are for employee work (both full-time and part-time) while others are freelancing or contract work. (This is why itâs important to know how you want your day to run. A day for an online, full-time employee looks very different than a day for an online freelancer. But, of course, the pay and benefits look much different as well.) You just need to know thereâs a difference. I was 48 when I started working full-time, online from home.Friends of mine were starting to talk about upcoming retirement and the second half of life. We were all discussing what the future would look like. Iâm here to tell you that no matter your age, working online is not only possible, but itâs exciting and freeing and makes the future full of possibilities. In fact, it can make you feel like a kid again! Feeling like a kid and working when and from where you want â" thereâs no such thing as âtoo oldâ for that! How to Provide an Optimal Employee Experience in the Workplace
How to Provide an Optimal Employee Experience in the Workplace The workplace is transforming at an unprecedented rate. Weâve now entered the cognitive era, where machines have the capacity to learn, reason, and interact with humans. This has resulted in blurred boundaries between humans and technology. But thereâs nothing to fear. Humans can now work with and see firsthand benefits from new technologies to achieve more than ever before. In a way, the cognitive era is really the âhuman eraâ where work proves to be a more rewarding experience for employees. Because of this, organizations are reexamining their employeesâ experiences at work as guidelines for improved job performance and sustained competitive advantage. Employee experience is best defined as an impactful and powerful â" and ultimately human â" experience, one in which employees feel inspired to invest more of their entire selves into the workplace. Research shows that if employees experience higher levels of respect and support and a sense of belonging at work, they tend to perform better, are more likely to exert discretionary effort at their jobs, and are less likely to leave companies. âOrganizations that provide more positive employee experiences stand to see greater ROI in terms of company success,â said Derek Irvine, Vice President, Client Strategy and Consulting, at Globoforce. âEmployeesâ commitment to their organizations increases significantly if they feel a sense of belonging and feel valued.â To improve employee experience, organizations must ask how their cultures can be enhanced to become more human-friendly. Answers can be found in a new study conducted by the IBM Smarter Workforce Institute and Globoforceâs WorkHuman Research Institute, which takes into account the employee experiences of 23,000 employees in 45 countries and territories. The studyâs resulting index captures five core facets of the modern employee experience: sense of belonging, purpose, achievement, happiness, and vigor. To enhance each of these, the study indicates that company leaders and managers need to provide a high level of clarity and direction. The study also examines organizational practices that drive âhumannessâ levels at work, including organizational trust, supportive coworker relationships, meaningful work, recognition, feedback and growth, empowerment and voice, and work-life balance. As the study shows there are several methods to improve employee experience in the workplace: Promote greater positive work experiences to retain talent. Analysis shows employees with less positive experiences are more than twice as likely to say they want to leave, versus those with much more positive experiences (44 percent vs. 21 percent). Offer recognition programs that provide rewards based on demonstrating core values. Organizations that do so have a considerably higher employee experience index score than those in organizations without recognition programs (81 percent vs. 62 percent). Recognize employees for the good work they do. 83 percent of employees report positive experiences when recognized, compared to 38 percent that are not recognized. Allow employee voices to be heard. Employees who feel their ideas and suggestions matter are more than twice as likely to report a positive employee experience than those who donât (83 percent vs. 34 percent). Foster team dynamics in the workplace. Employees in teams have more positive employee experiences at work than those who work independently (73 percent vs. 61 percent). We must also recognize the role leaders and managers play in defining employeesâ work experiences, and enable managers to design experiences consistent with an organizationâs core values. An organizationâs actions need to emulate the values it wants its employees to practice as well as nurture an environment that reinforces mutually supportive coworker relationships. This helps employees understand the deeper meaning of their work and how it contributes to the wider organizational purpose and goals. These analyses indicate that more positive employee experiences are linked to better performance, extra effort at work, and lower turnover rates. Most importantly, organizations must listen regularly to the voices of their employees to understand the nature of their experiences at work. In doing so, these employee experiences will drive discretionary energy, resulting in the best work of employeesâ lives for their companies.
